Biography

Michael Conlon received the degree of DipEE/BSc from Kevin Street College of Technology (DIT) in 1982.  He obtained a MEngSc from the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG) in 1984 and a PhD in 1987, also from NUIG.  The topic of the PhD research thesis was the electromagnetic transient modelling and analysis of power transformer windings.

Between 1987 and 1999 he worked at the Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering, Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.  He held positions as Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Acting Director of the Centre for Electrical Power Engineering at Monash University.  In 1993 he was a visiting academic at the Institute for Electrical Power Systems and Power Economics, RWTH, Aachen, Germany.  Between 1999 and 2002, he was manager, Energy Forecasting and Reliability with the Victorian Energy Networks Corporation (VENCorp) in Melbourne, Australia.  He joined the School of Electrical Engineering Systems, DIT in 2002 and has held the positions of Head, Department of Control Engineering and Acting Head of School of Electrical Engineering Systems. He is Director of the DIT Electrical Power Research Centre (DIT-PRC) (www.dit.ie/eprc).

His main research interests are in the general area of electrical power engineering and control systems applications. Specific areas include power systems analysis, including transient and dynamic analysis of power systems; simulation and control of power systems; electromagnetic transient analysis; applications of superconductivity in power systems; power systems economics; power systems reliability analysis including cost of reliability; quality of supply, development of wind energy including operational issues and integration into transmission networks.
